Journalism & Creative Writing Track

LEARN GOOD WRITING SKILLS

INTRODUCTION TO THE PYRAMID CODE OF WRITING

PRACTICE WRITING TECHNIQUES

Learn the ins and outs of journalism. Girls learn basic web reporting, interviewing, editing and news writing techniques. Students spend part of the day in a classroom environment designed to mirror a professional newsroom, where they brainstorm story ideas, research current affairs and learn how to write news stories, the other half of the day is spent interviewing in the field. Girls also have the opportunity to explore other genres of writing: such as Slam Poetry and Fiction. By the end of the program, students will have produced multiple stories on a chosen topic of interest..Each student will have an opportunity to have their piece published online and to start building a professional portfolio via our partnerships with local weekly papers.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING

"There are those things you do for your kids that you look back on in 20 years and say ‘that was one of the best things we ever did for our girls’. That’s this camp!"

"You may ask, “What is so great about, Girls Rock S.B. as compared to all the other programs for kids?” And while the other programs may offer great things, no other non-profit will give the gift of self-realization and self-empowerment through music like Girls Rock S. B. does."

WHAT CAMPERS ARE SAYING

“One word: Sadie. I met Sadie when we were eight at Girls Rock day camp. She moved away from Santa Barbara about 5 years ago, but we’ve been coming to sleep away camp together ever since. This past year we got to be a part of the Leaders in Training (LIT) program they offer with a bunch of other amazing girls. I cannot even imagine what my life would be like without the love and support of my camp family. They are the nicest, most welcoming and fun bunch of people in the world.”
