2019 Volunteer Exchange Program

Guidelines

Who can apply?

  • Any volunteer from any camp around the world with at least 1 year (1 season) of experience in summer camp programming.

  • Any member of a rock camp executive team who is in the process of starting a rock camp in the next year or currently directing one.

How long will the commitment be?

The program runs on a weekly basis. The volunteers selected to participate will be required to participate for at least two weeks of programming, Saturday to Saturday. 

How many hours a week can I expect to work?

Sleep Away Camp: At Sleep Away Camp everyone works between 50-55 hours per week and has one 24 hour period off each week.

Day Camp: At Day Camp folks work either full time ( 8 hours per day ) or part time (4 hours per day ) shifts. Friday is our showcase day and the hours are extended by 2 hours that day. 

What is the Application process like? 

We open Volunteer Applications in November each year. You will be contacted by Jan 15th to schedule an interview. Offers will be made no later than Feb 15th, giving you ample time to book your travel and prepare for your summer travels. 

What Can I expect while at camp? 

You can expect to meet a lot of great people, learn a lot about programming, have the opportunity to idea share with Girls Rock teachers and directors from around the globe, and work with amazing campers.

What type of positions are available? See below. 

We have 2 types of programming this year:

  • Amplify Sleep-away camp (7 sessions)

  • Girls Rock SB Day camp (2 sessions)

How is Girls Rock SB helping me get there?

Our program is geared to financially help volunteers get to our camp. We provide all meals and lodging during Amplify Sleep Away Camp, and lodging and lunch during Girls Rock SB Day Camps.

Financial help is based on the volunteer location and need.

Aid Breakdown

For International Volunteers:

GRSB will provide meals and lodging (Sleep Away ) Lodging and lunch only (Day).

GRSB will pay up to $500.00 toward airfare.

GRSB will support with any documents/written material needed to travel to the U.S.

GRSB will support with curriculum, guides and materials in English to facilitate instruction for non-native English speakers.

GRSB will provide a stipend for each additional week @ $150/week

For U.S. Volunteers (Non-SoCal)

GRSB will provide meals and lodging (Sleep Away ) Lodging and lunch only (Day).

GRSB will pay up to $350.00 towards airfare, gas or any terrestrial transportation.

GRSB will provide a stipend for each additional week @ $150/week

For U.S. Volunteers (SoCal)

 GRSB will provide meals and lodging (Sleep Away ) Lodging and lunch only (Day).

GRSB can provide a stipend of up to $100.00 for transportation and/or other needs depending on the financial situation of the volunteer.

GRSB will provide a stipend for each additional week @ $150/week

Roles and Descriptions:

Instrument Coach: Instrument Coaches need to have previous experience teaching, ideally with youth. It is ideal if you have written a class curriculum before, however we can provide you with that if you have not. Instrument teachers should feel comfortable with a class size of between 4-8 campers. 

Band Coach: Band Coaches need to have previous experience being in a band before and ideally writing music. Band coaches should feel comfortable with a band size of 3-6 campers. No experience teaching music needed. 

Workshop Leader: Workshop Leaders should feel comfortable working in larger groups ( between 10-20 campers) . All workshops need to be interactive. You will have at least 3-4 staff helping supervise the workshop at all times. Some workshops we have offered in the past have been: music video making, forming healthy female friendships, songwriting, body positivity, authentically you, self-defense, friendship bracelet making, Dj, photography, DIY touring, zine making and more.

Director of Gear: Our Director of Gear should feel comfortable with all our gear. They will be in charge of gear workshops for campers and staff, check in and out system for all gear and caring for and fixing gear. 

Director of Mail: Director of Mail is a sleep away camp position only. The director of mail is responsible for passing out all mail for campers during the week. 

Director of Transportation: The Director of Transportation correlates all travel for traveling staff and sleep away campers. They work alongside the executive director and summer camp director. 

PM Counselor: The PM Counselor is a sleep away camp position only. The PM Counselor is responsible for all PM activities with their fellow PM staff. They are also responsible for being on night duty in the dorms. All PM counselors stay up until 11:00 pm at the dorms and handle anything that occurs from the hours of 5-11 pm with the support of the director. 

Counselor: The term counselor refers to all roles that are either extra support roles or non-musical camp roles. 

Photography Teacher: Photography Teachers need to have previous experience teaching, ideally with youth. It is ideal if you have written a class curriculum before, however we can provide you with that if you have not. Photography Teachers should feel comfortable with a class size of between 7- 14 campers. Photography Teachers will have an assistant if more than 8 campers are enrolled. 

Coding Teacher: Coding Teachers need to have previous experience teaching, ideally with youth. It is ideal if you have written a class curriculum before, however we can provide you with that if you have not. Coding Teachers should feel comfortable with a class size of between 7- 14 campers. Coding Teachers will have an assistant if more than 8 campers are enrolled. 

Music Production Teacher: Music Production Teachers need to have previous experience teaching, ideally with youth. It is ideal if you have written a class curriculum before, however we can provide you with that if you have not. Music Production Teachers should feel comfortable with a class size of between 3- 10 campers. Music Production Teachers will have an assistant if more than 4 campers are enrolled. Gear Breakdown: Mac Book Pros and iMacs, Focusrite Scarelett ii interface, Abelton Push, Abelton Suites, Abelton Live, ProTools, Logic, SM58 mics, mic stands, pop filters, Midi keys boards, Machine by Native Instruments, external hard drive. 

Journalism Teacher: Journalism Teachers need to have previous experience teaching, ideally with youth. It is ideal if you have written a class curriculum before, however we can provide you with that if you have not. Journalism Teachers should feel comfortable with a class size of between 3-10 campers. Gear Breakdown: 4 Google Chrome notebooks. 

DJ Teacher: DJ Teachers need to have previous experience teaching, ideally with youth. It is ideal if you have written a class curriculum before, however we can provide you with that if you have not. DJ Teachers should feel comfortable with a class size of between 3- 10 campers. DJ Teachers will have an assistant if more than 4 campers are enrolled. Gear Breakdown: Mac Book Pros and iMacs, Machine by Native Instruments, Traktor L4 by Native Instruments. 

Store Leader: The Store Leader is a sleep away camp position only. This refers to a position working our camp store. More details will be given about this position at orientations. 

Director of Social Media: The Director of Social Media is responsible for documenting camp via our social platforms. They work closely with the Director of Photography. 

Director of Photography: The Director of Photography is responsible for shooting our camper photo packages and documenting camp via our camp blog. Gear Breakdown:  iMacs and 1 Surface Pro Laptop, A mix of different DSLR cameras ( most with video), SD Cards, Card reader, Carrying cases, Tripod, Lighting and backdrop set up. 

Director of Sound: The Director of Sound runs all lunch time band performances. They should feel comfortble running a sound board and getting a good mix. 

Could I teach a workshop?

Yes! If you have a cool workshop idea, please submit a Summer workshop proposal at the link below! If you need materials GRSB will provide them upon approval.
